  • Is platinum halal or haram?

Unfortunately platinum cannot be worn by men. In recent times platinum has become an alternative to gold for men to wear. However platinum cannot be worn by men in the same way gold cannot. So as jewellery: rings etc, it cannot be worn in the same way gold cannot.

It can however, be used for the same purposes gold can, which is as a use for another purpose other than jewellery or use which is based on other than itself. An example of this is platinum buttons. Buttons are used to fasten a shirt, the purpose is not as jewellery adornment or the buttons themselves. Or likewise, a platinum watch strap, the purpose of which is to hold the actual watch face. Without buttons, the shirt cannot function, without the strap, the watch cannot be worn. Therefore in these situations the said metals can be used since they are to support the function of another item and not jewellery and use is not based on the zaat of the metal. (Where use is maqsood bi’zaat, it is HARAM to wear/use and where use is bi’tabba, it is permissible halal).

But.. To clarify once again, jewellery made from platinum (and of course gold) cannot be worn.

    Now the illa for this:

There are several ahadith quoted by Allama Ibn Abideen in fatawah shami, also quoted in the text of durr Al mukhtar and mentioned in Hidaya and also Mabsut and kanz ul daqa’iq, just to mention a few, but the most pertinent ahadith state the following.

    1) Narrated by Sayyedena Burayda R.A. A companion entered the majestic presence and company of Rasoolallah ﷺ and he was wearing a ring made from iron. Rasoolallah ﷺ said: why do I find the ornaments of hellfire on you? The companion immediately took of his ring and asked: Ya Rasoolallah ﷺ , what should I where a ring of? The Beloved ﷺ replied: wear a ring of silver, less than one mishkaal.

    2) A companion entered the holy domain of the Beloved of Allah’s ﷺ presence wearing a ring of copper or brass. The Prophet ﷺ asked: why is it I can smell hellfire on you? Immediately the companion removed the ring.

Allama Ibn Abideen and the other akaabir fuqaha narrate that on this basis, Imam Azam, sahibayn and all akaabir fuqaha have ruled that the only material a man can wear as a ring is silver. And in fact other jewellery should not be worn. They rule that iron, copper, brass are all explicitly haram along with gold. All other metals other than silver, including platinum are implicitly haram. It is actually the amr/order of Rasoolallah ﷺ that only silver should be worn as a ring, and that too less than one mishkaal which is 4.37g!

Some modern fuqaha have done qiyaas on gold to rule platinum as haram. Whilst there is jawaz for this reasoning, above is the actual reason that fuqaha have ruled platinum as haraam.

So platinum is haram for men…

Rasoolallah ﷺ wore a ring of silver which was less than one mishkaal and was used as the famous seal of prophethood.

Allah ﷻ & His Rasool ﷺ know best.

  • Keeping Bad Company

Continuing on from the same theme as previous weeks I would like to talk about keeping bad company and what effect this has on a persons Imaan.
Unnecessary companionship is a chronic disease that causes much harm. How often have the wrong kind of companionship and intermixing deprived people of Allah’s generosity, planting discord in their hearts which even the passage of time-even if it were long enough for mountains to be worn away-has been unable to dispel. In keeping such company one can find the roots of loss, both in this life and in the next life.

A servant should benefit from companionship. In order to do so he should divide people into four categories, and be careful not to get them mixed up, for once one of them is mixed with another, then evil can find its way through to him:

The *FIRST* category are those people whose company is like food: it is indispensable, night or day. Once a servant has taken his need from it, he leaves it be until he requires it again, and so on. These are the people with knowledge of Allah-of His commands, of the scheming of His enemies, and of the diseases of the heart and their remedies- who wish well for Allah, His Prophet SAW and His servants. Associating with this type of person is an achievement in itself.

The *SECOND* category are those people whose company is like a medicine. They are only required when a disease sets in. When you are healthy, you have no need of them. However, mixing with them is sometimes necessary for your livelihood, businesses, consultation and the like. Once what you need from them has been fulfilled, mixing with them should be avoided.

The *THIRD* category are those people whose company is harmful. Mixing with this type of person is like a disease, in all its variety and degrees and strengths and weaknesses. Associating with one or some of them is like an incurable chronic disease. You will never profit either in this life or in the next life if you have them for company, and you will surely lose either one or both of your deen and your livelihood because of them. If their companionship has taken hold of you and is established, then it becomes a fatal, terrifying sickness.

Amongst such people are those who neither speak any good that might benefit you, nor listen closely to you so that they might benefit from you. They do not know their souls and consequently put their selves in their rightful place. If they speak, their words fall on their listeners’ hearts like the lashes of a cane, while all the while they are full of admiration for and delight in their own words.

They cause distress to those in their company, while believing that they are the sweet scent of the gathering. If they are silent, they are heavier than a massive millstone-too heavy to carry or even drag across the floor. ( Ash-Shafi’, may Allah be pleased with him, is reported to have said, “Whenever a tedious person sits next to me, the side on which he is sitting feels lower down than the other side of me.”)

All in all, mixing with anyone who is bad for the soul will not last, even if it is unavoidable. It can be one of the most distressing aspects of a servant’s life that he is plagued by such person, with whom it may be necessary to associate. In such a relationship, a servant should cling to good behaviour, only presenting him with his outward appearance, while disguising his inner soul, until Allah offers him a way out of his affliction and the means of escape from this situation.

The *FOURTH* category are those people whose company is doom itself. It is like taking poison: its victim either finds an antidote or perishes. Many people belong to this category. They are the people of religious innovation and misguidance, those who abandon the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah SAW and advocate other beliefs. They call what is the Sunnah a bid’a and vice-versa. A man with any intellect should not sit in their assemblies nor mix with them. The result of doing so will either be the death of his heart or, at the very best, its falling seriously ill.

May Allah SWT give us the strength to search out the first category and to sit in their company.

  • Heartbreaking story of Hareem’s fight against Cancer

On the 13th of August 2017, Hareem Ahmed had vomited blood and was in and out of consciousness. The emergency services were informed and admitted Hareem into Queen’s Medical Centre. The doctor that reviewed Hareem’s medical records had made the assumption that Hareem had acid reflux, as the doctors suggested his health to be perfect for his age – if not better.

Whilst Hareem was admitted he underwent an Endoscopy scan which uncovered a large sized lump in his oesophagus. The doctors had informed Hareem’s family this could be cancerous. He was subjected to a CT scan which confirmed the family’s worst fear, Hareem had been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, which has now spread to his gland. This came as a shock to even the doctors as they stated they’ve never experienced this in their lifetimes and is extremely rare to be diagnosed with oesophagus cancer at the age of 24.

He currently is 24 years of age, this form of cancer is extremely rare in a young adults as “less than 15% of cases are found by people younger than age 55.” We, Hareem’s brothers, are starting this GoFundMe page on his behalf to help fund for his treatment abroad at John Hopkins hospital in America. The specific treatment that we are seeking at John Hopkins hospital is Immunotherapy, which would be the most effective treatment for the cancer that he has.

Hareem had been diagnosed 6 days before his first wedding anniversary. Hareem Ahmed married on 26th of August 2016 and had dreams of having children. However, being diagnosed with cancer 6 days before your 1st wedding anniversary is heart-breaking. As you can imagine, a year prior to the diagnosis – on his wedding day, he was flooded with happiness which was amplified through his heart-warming smiley, even though he has always had that smile on his face. Despite the devistating news he was confronted with, he still smiles and laughs all the time. He’s still the same Hareem everyone knows him as; happy, cheerful and kind-hearted.

Because of this, Hareem has now been forced to put his life on hold. During these 24 years of his life, he has been working towards helping others, having a family and owning his very own business. Hareem has dreams and ambitions to pursue a career within the Business Management and Marketing sector, as this was the subject he studied whilst at University. Furthermore, Hareem firmly believes owning a business isn’t enough as helping others is his ultimate goal.

As Hareem firmly believes the family, friends and the general public will assist him in this time of need, Hareem wishes to help others through charity work once he is succesful in his battle with cancer. After being diagnosed with cancer, Hareem has stated he wishes to help those that most need it ranging from those with cancer to those that are homeless. Furthermore, he has also stated that once he recovers from this battle against cancer, he wishes to devot his life towards charity work by starting his own charity foundation and volunteering spare time in order to help those that most need it, as well as owning a business to get him by.

Hareem is a very confident and well spoken individual who aspires to achieve the best he possibly can. He has a strong state of mind and has remained strong throughout this difficult time. He is very thankful for all the support he has been receiving and also reads every comment and message. As he is currently recovering, he’s unable to respond to everyone but he does want everyone to know he is very thankful and appreciative of all the support.

We ask for your help to raise money for Hareem and the urgent treatment he requires to help get his life back on track. No amount is too small and we will forever be thankful for any help that is recieved.

  • Customers demanding to know whether Cadbury is Halal or Not!

Cadbury has been forced to respond to furious customers after an old picture surfaced online indicating that its chocolate Easter eggs in the UK are halal certified.

Customers anger was sparked after the picture, which appears to have been taken in 2014, of a Cadbury’s employee holding a certificate showing its products are halal-certified surfaced on social media with the caption: “Cadbury proudly displaying their latest new halal certificates, pass it on.”

As soon as the image was re-shared on Twitter some customers accused the brand of “Muslim appeasement” while other threatened to boycott it all together.

As a result, Cadbury responded to the fierce reaction by explaining:

“None of our UK products are halal certified and we have never made any changes to our chocolate to specifically make them halal.”

“They are just suitable for those following a halal diet in the same way that standard food such as bread or water.”

In a separate statement a spokesperson for Mondelez, which owns Cadbury, said: “In the UK our chocolate products are suitable for vegetarians and those following a halal diet, however they are not Halal certified.  As our chocolate products do not contain meat, the ritual of halal does not apply and in the UK carry no halal certifications of any kind. The only animal related products we use in our British chocolate are milk and eggs. We take care to point out if and when our products are suitable for certain sections of society who take an interest in the ingredients and manufacturing process.

“Elsewhere in the world, we may label products with any number of certifications based on consumer interest and dietary requirements, and the best place for consumers to find that information is on the product label in that country.  However, Cadbury welcomes consumers of all faiths and none.”

Under Sharia law, or Islamic law, products that contain pork are not considered halal and so should not be consumed by Muslims.

The image  appears to originate from the firm’s Asia-Pacific market.

In 2014, Islamic authorities in Malaysia confirmed Cadbury chocolate had been found not to contain pork DNA after concerns were raised about whether the company’s chocolate contained pig DNA.

  • Dubai’s 22-carat Gold Tea!

Dubai: Believe it or not, you can now drink gold in Dubai. Costing just Dh55 a cup, gold tea is available at a promotional price at Mocca Art Cafe, Downtown Dubai.
“We introduced it around two weeks ago,” cafe founder and partner Ashraf Mahran told XPRESS. The 32-year-old Egyptian was inspired to bring the concept here after tasting it in a UK hotel.

“Basically, we use gold-plated tea leaves that are edible and are approved by the authorities.”
The tea travels far before being served here. “We source the tea from Ceylon, send it to Germany to get it plated, then to Morocco for flavouring. The end product is unique.”
Mahran said the tea is popular among Emiratis, Westerners and other expatriates. “Gold tea is common in places like China, India and the West, but this is the first coffee shop to serve it here,” he said.
The tea has a distinct taste. “The flavour is very distinct and the tea is beneficial to health as it is very relaxing,” he added.

  • Could this be the last we see of Amir Khan?

Khan is due to return to the ring on April 21, his first fight since May 2016 when he was knocked out by Canelo Alvarez.

The 31-year-old has since had hand surgery, endured a public break-up and reconciliation with his wife Faryal Makhdoom and appeared on “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!”.

And Khan’s next opponent Lo Greco took the opportunity at their first press conference to ridicule the Brit about his personal life, including a Tweet in which he accused Anthony Joshua of having an affair with his wife, an allegation all parties have now rejected.
“After Canelo, you went on a losing streak: family, wife… and then you go out and you tweet to the heavyweight champion of the world,” Lo Greco said.

“What is wrong with you, mate? What is wrong?

“You go out and you tweet to the heavyweight champion of the world that he can have your leftovers.”
At that point, Khan jumped to his feet and threw the glass of water in front of him into Lo Greco’s face.

The action was in stark contrast to Khan’s quotes ahead of the press conference, in which Khan had insisted there was respect between the two boxers.

“I can’t wait to get back into the ring,” Khan had said.

“Phil Lo Greco will be coming with everything to win this fight and I’m not going to give him an inch.

  • Ofsted Question Muslim Girls

Ofsted’s recommendation for inspectors to question Muslim primary school girls if they are wearing a hijab has been condemned as “kneejerk, discriminatory and institutionally racist” by more than 1,000 teachers, academics and faith leaders.

Amanda Spielman, the head of Ofsted and chief inspector of schools, said the move was to tackle situations in which wearing a hijab “could be interpreted as sexualisation” of girls as young as four or five, when most Islamic teaching requires headdress for girls only at the onset of puberty.

“While respecting parents’ choice to bring up their children according to their cultural norms, creating an environment where primary school children are expected to wear the hijab could be interpreted as sexualisation of young girls,” Spielman said.

The Muslim Council of Britain secretary-general, Harun Khan, responded to the move saying: “It is deeply worrying that Ofsted has announced it will be specifically targeting and quizzing young Muslim girls who choose to wear the headscarf.

“It sends a clear message to all British women who adopt this that they are second-class citizens, that while they are free to wear the headscarf, the establishment would prefer that they do not,” he said.

“The many British Muslims who choose to wear the headscarf have done extremely well in education and are breaking glass ceilings. It is disappointing that this is becoming policy without even engaging with a diverse set of mainstream Muslim voices on the topic,” he added.

  • Apr 20 2011

Inside a cavernous coolroom a giant sliding door opens quickly and a lone worker pushes an aircraft catering trolley into the chilly air, lining it up with a dozen others below a sign bearing a three digit flight code.

The catering supplies for Emirates flight EK037 to Birmingham is ready. In a short while its trolleys will be loaded into an elevator then rolled aboard large trucks with scissor-style lifts to elevate the trolleys to the doors of a Boeing 777.

It’s a scene repeated a mind-boggling 170 times a day. That’s how many Emirates flights depart Dubai on a rolling 24 hour basis. In cart numbers, that’s 7000 of them every day passing through this giant facility. Another flight kitchen nearby serves more meals – destined for other airlines flying to and from the United Arab Emirates’ largest airport and airline hub.

Emirates’ number one flight kitchen, preparing meals only for its own flights, comprises 56,000sqm – and already it is too small. My guide, John Earnshaw, assistant VP corporate with Emirates Flight Catering, pauses several times to point out through windows where ground works are underway for a chiller expansion or to where other catering facilities are to be expanded or replaced – all in the aid of keeping pace with the airline’s relentless growth.
